Birrarung Marr

Birrarung Marr is an eight-hectare stretch of parkland sandwiched between the central business district and the Yarra River. Its name comes from the Woiwurrung language, combining the word for the river and the term for the riverbank. Before nineteen ninety-seven, this space held railway yards and industrial concrete. The city scraped that away to reconnect the grid to the water, creating a landscape of rolling terraces and iron-sculpted towers that move and chime when the wind picks up across the river.
