Enterprize Park sits where the Yarra River meets a jagged concrete wall, marked by a scattering of large, rough-hewn basalt rocks. In eighteen thirty-five, the schooner Enterprize docked at this muddy bank, carrying the settlers who began the permanent European occupation of Melbourne. John Batman and John Pascoe Fawkner arrived here, stepping off the boat to claim the land. Today, the park keeps that history quiet, replaced by the sound of city traffic rumbling overhead on the Flinders Street viaduct.
