The Afro-Brazilian Museum occupies the former Faculty of Medicine building, identifiable by its massive, neoclassical stone facade facing the Terreiro de Jesus. Inside, sixteen giant wooden panels carved by the artist Carybé dominate the main hall. He spent years observing the Candomblé ceremonies of Salvador to replicate the movements and expressions of the Orishas. These carvings serve as the core of a collection that traces the deep connections between West African cultures and the development of Brazilian society.
