A seven-meter bronze sculpture of Maria Felipa stands in the center of the square, holding a torch and a machete. She was a Black fisherwoman who led an all-female militia during the Brazilian War of Independence in eighteen twenty-three. While men fought on the front lines, Felipa and her group patrolled the coast of Itaparica, burning Portuguese ships and defending the island against invasions. The city dedicated this space to her memory, elevating a local hero who once navigated these very waters.
