Monumento da Cruz do Pascoal

The Cruz do Pascoal stands as a seven-foot tall marble cross perched on a stone pedestal, anchored right into the steep hillside of the Santo Antonio district. It was carved in Lisbon in seventeen forty-three and shipped across the Atlantic by a Portuguese merchant named Pascoal Marques de Almeida. He placed it here after surviving a dangerous sea voyage. The cross has marked this specific bend in the road for centuries, long before the surrounding neighborhood grew up around its base.
