Grupo Cultural Olodum

other

The Pelourinho neighborhood pulses to the rhythm of the Olodum drum corps, recognized by the striking red, green, yellow, black, and white paint on the building walls. This organization began in nineteen seventy-nine as a carnival group for residents of the Maciel neighborhood to celebrate Afro-Brazilian culture. During the nineteen eighties, Olodum transitioned into a permanent social project, teaching children music and percussion. The heavy, syncopated beats echoing from this headquarters have influenced musicians from Paul Simon to Michael Jackson.
