Praça da Inglaterra

The Praça da Inglaterra sits in the lower city of Salvador, anchored by a bronze bust of a man named Luis Tarquinio. He owned the largest textile mill in Brazil during the late nineteenth century and insisted his workers live in houses with proper sanitation and ventilation, an anomaly for the era. The square serves as a landing point for the historic Lacerda Elevator nearby. Ships once docked right against the quay here, offloading British imports directly into the bustling commercial warehouses of the Comércio district.
