Memorial das Baianas

The Memorial das Baianas features a central bronze statue of a woman dressed in the traditional lace robes and headwrap of the Salvador street vendor. This space celebrates the women who prepare acarajé, the deep-fried black-eyed pea fritters that define the local diet. Decades ago, these women operated without legal recognition, often facing police harassment while they sold their food on the streets. Their persistence eventually forced the city to grant them protected status as a vital part of Bahian culture.
