The Escadaria do Passo features a steep, dramatic flight of stone stairs framed by two tall, weathered colonial churches. It served as a vital path for pilgrims and local residents traveling between the harbor and the higher parts of Salvador. In seventeen ninety-six, the Brotherhood of the Blessed Sacrament of the Cathedral commissioned these steps to bridge the uneven terrain. The stairs appear in the background of the film O Pagador de Promessas, where the protagonist carries a heavy wooden cross up to the church doors.
