Paróquia de Santo Antônio Além do Carmo

The Paróquia de Santo Antônio Além do Carmo is defined by its deep, ochre-colored facade topped with twin bell towers that stand against the bright Salvador sky. Built in the mid-eighteenth century, the church sits on the edge of a cliff overlooking the Bay of All Saints. Its construction was funded by the Brotherhood of Saint Anthony, a group of freed enslaved people and artisans who wanted their own place of worship, separate from the wealthier orders that dominated the city center.
