The Hôtel Martinez is a seven-story block of white art deco concrete facing the Mediterranean. Emmanuel Martinez, an Italian furniture maker, opened the hotel in nineteen twenty-nine. He converted his own family villa into a site for travelers arriving in Cannes. During the nineteen thirties, the hotel hosted the first jury of the Cannes Film Festival. A portrait of the founder still hangs in the lobby, watching guests walk past the original mahogany wood panels and toward the sea.
