Église Notre-Dame d'Espérance de Cannes

religious

The Church of Notre-Dame d'Espérance anchors the highest point of the Le Suquet neighborhood with a massive, square stone bell tower. Built in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, this late Gothic structure served as the primary place of worship for the local fishing community. Centuries of salt air have weathered its rough exterior, but the interior remains a quiet refuge. Sailors once arrived here to offer small silver or wax models of their ships to the Virgin Mary, asking for safe passage home.
