The Tour du Masque de fer sits on the rocky point of the Île Sainte-Marguerite, a square stone fortress rising directly from the Mediterranean surf. This is the oldest part of the Royal Fort, where local legend traps a prisoner whose face remained hidden behind a velvet mask. King Louis the Fourteenth kept this man here for eleven years in total isolation. His jailer, Bénigne Dauvergne de Saint-Mars, ensured no one heard his voice or saw his face before he vanished into the shadows of history.
