Jean Mermoz Square

Jean Mermoz Square in Neuilly-sur-Seine is named after one of the most celebrated aviators in French history. Jean Mermoz was a pioneer of long-distance airmail flights, achieving the first commercial crossing of the South Atlantic in a seaplane. He was a national hero and remains a figure of great cultural significance in France. Beyond his aviation achievements, Mermoz had a direct personal connection to this town. He resided here in the nineteen thirties and served as a member of the municipal council after being elected in nineteen thirty-five. He even co-founded the French Social Party while living in the community. Today, the square behind the local town hall features a statue of the pilot, serving as a permanent memorial to his dual life as an explorer of the skies and a local representative.
