The Hôpital Lariboisière features a symmetrical limestone facade capped by a pediment that spans nearly an entire city block. It was commissioned in eighteen thirty-nine to relieve the city's crowded hospitals during a cholera epidemic. Its designer, Martin-Pierre Gauthier, arranged the wards in a cross shape around central courtyards to isolate patients and improve airflow. The Countess of Lariboisière left a massive fortune to fund its completion, ensuring that the poor received medical care in a building modeled after a royal palace.
