The Cité Jeanne-d'Arc is marked by rows of brick buildings and metal balconies that stand out from the surrounding Haussmann style architecture. Built between eighteen ninety-five and nineteen oh five, this complex was one of the first social housing projects in Paris funded by the Lebaudy brothers, who were wealthy sugar refiners. They envisioned these sturdy, sanitary apartments as an alternative to the crowded, unhealthy tenements where many laborers lived. It was a private experiment in worker housing long before the city took over.
