The square du Serment de Koufra holds a massive, weathered anchor that sits directly on the pavement. This small green space commemorates a promise made in nineteen forty-one by Colonel Philippe Leclerc and his soldiers. After capturing the Kufra oasis in Libya from Axis forces, they swore they would not lay down their arms until the French flag flew over the cathedral in Strasbourg. They kept that oath, eventually liberating the city three years later, and the anchor now marks the spot of their victory.
