The Necker–Enfants Malades Hospital occupies several city blocks with a sprawling mix of centuries-old stone buildings and modern glass structures. It serves as the oldest pediatric hospital in the world. In seventeen seventy-eight, Madame Necker founded a hospice here to care for the poor, specifically those turned away by larger institutions. René Laennec worked in these halls in eighteen sixteen when he invented the stethoscope, originally just a rolled-up piece of paper, to better hear the hearts of his patients.
