The Esplanade Claude-Luter is a paved public square defined by the low, curved brick wall that separates it from the bustle of the street. It bears the name of the clarinetist who led the revival of New Orleans style jazz in post-war Paris. Luter spent decades performing in the nearby cellars of the Latin Quarter and Saint-Germain-des-Prés, bringing the sounds of Sidney Bechet to a generation of French listeners who had never heard them live before.
