Parc de la Butte-du-Chapeau-Rouge

The Parc de la Butte-du-Chapeau-Rouge rises as a rugged, grassy hillside built directly over the remains of an old gypsum quarry. It opened in nineteen thirty-nine, featuring geometric stone staircases and a stark, modernist fountain by sculptor Raymond Couvègnes. During the Second World War, the site served as a defensive position for German soldiers who installed anti-aircraft guns in the craters left behind by the excavation. The park remains one of the few green spaces in Paris designed in the Art Deco style.
