A simple granite slab marks the final resting place of Yilmaz Güney in the Père Lachaise Cemetery. He arrived in Paris as an exile in nineteen eighty-two after escaping a Turkish prison, where he had been serving a long sentence for his political beliefs and filmmaking. He died of cancer just two years later. His grave sits near the perimeter wall, a quiet plot for a man who spent his life directing films about the harsh realities of life for the marginalized in Turkey.
