Church of Saint-Bernard de la Chapelle

The Church of Saint-Bernard de la Chapelle features a dramatic neo-Gothic facade of gray stone, topped by a tall, slender spire that pierces the skyline of the Goutte d'Or neighborhood. Built in the mid-nineteenth century, it became the site of a tense standoff in nineteen ninety-six. A group of undocumented immigrants occupied the sanctuary for over two months to protest deportation laws, drawing hundreds of supporters to the cobblestones outside until police eventually forced their way through the heavy oak doors to remove them.
