Square des Écrivains Combattants Morts pour la France

This small, tranquil square stands exactly where a defensive barrier once loomed over the city. It occupies the site of what was known as bastion number fifty-eight of the Thiers Wall, a massive ring of fortifications that encircled Paris in the mid nineteenth century. After those defensive walls were demolished in the early twentieth century, the city transformed the cleared land into a series of green spaces, including this one which was officially established in nineteen twenty-nine.
