Folie des Visites

The bright red structure you see before you is known as the Folie des Visites. It is one of twenty-six identical, yet structurally diverse, red metal buildings scattered across the Parc de la Villette. Architect Bernard Tschumi designed these structures in the nineteen eighties to serve as a grid of reference points across the former slaughterhouse district. The name folie draws on a long French architectural tradition, but here it takes on a modern, industrial character. While historical folies were whimsical garden pavilions for aristocrats, these modern red cubes were built to provide functional spaces, ranging from workshops to cafes. Their vibrant color serves as a deliberate, sharp contrast to the surrounding greenery and industrial history of the site. Each folie is anchored to the landscape at the intersection of a precise, one-hundred-and-twenty-meter grid. You can find this specific one marking the corner where the Galerie de la Villette meets the Canal de l'Ourcq.
