Ussher Fort

Ussher Fort displays walls of sun-bleached stone and deep, cavernous archways that look out over the Gulf of Guinea. The Dutch built this fortification in sixteen forty-nine, naming it Fort Crevecoeur to protect their trade interests in the Gold Coast. Its history turned dark when the British took control in eighteen sixty-eight, eventually converting the bastion into a prison. Kwame Nkrumah, who led Ghana to independence, spent time behind these thick walls while fighting for the end of colonial rule.
