Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park

The mausoleum at Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park takes the shape of a giant, inverted sword of state, clad in Italian marble and topped with bronze. It sits on the exact spot where Kwame Nkrumah stood in nineteen fifty-seven to declare Ghana independent from British colonial rule. After he was overthrown in a nineteen sixty-six coup, his remains were first buried in his home village, then returned here in nineteen ninety-two. The site holds his sarcophagus, resting on a pedestal surrounded by flowing water.
