The Umbrellas by Zongolopoulos

The Umbrellas stand thirteen meters tall on the waterfront of Thessaloniki, a cluster of thin steel needles reaching toward the sky. Sculptor Giorgos Zongolopoulos designed them for the Venice Biennale in nineteen ninety-three, but the sculpture found its permanent home here four years later. At night, the rods light up, casting a skeleton of glowing lines against the dark Aegean. They create a fragile silhouette that seems to dissolve when the wind blows hard off the water, leaving only the frame behind.
