Konstantinos Karamanlis Statue

historic

The bronze statue of Konstantinos Karamanlis stands with his hand raised in a familiar wave, overlooking the harbor of Thessaloniki. As the founder of the New Democracy party and a dominant figure in Greek politics for decades, Karamanlis oversaw the country’s transition to democracy after the military junta fell in nineteen seventy-four. The sculptor, Praxiteles Tzanoulinos, cast the figure in his characteristic statesman pose, capturing the man who steered Greece into the European Economic Community while keeping his gaze fixed toward the sea.
