Holocaust Memorial

A seven branched bronze menorah stands at the center of this memorial, its flames replaced by the contorted shapes of human bodies. This sculpture marks the site of the former Jewish cemetery, a vast space destroyed by local authorities and Nazi occupiers during the nineteen forties. Thousands of gravestones were uprooted to pave roads or build foundations across the city. The memorial sits on a small patch of that original earth, preserving the memory of a community that defined Thessaloniki for centuries.
