Latomos Monastery - Holy Church of Hosios David

The Latomos Monastery is identifiable by its small, unassuming brick exterior that conceals an extraordinary five-hundreds-era mosaic. During the period of iconoclasm, monks plastered over the wall to hide the image of a youthful, beardless Christ, saving it from destruction. The mosaic remained buried under mortar and whitewash for centuries, forgotten until an earthquake in nineteen forty shook the wall and cracked the plaster. This reveal exposed a depiction of Christ unlike most later icons, showing him surrounded by prophetic visions.
