Monasteriotes Synagogue

The Monasteriotes Synagogue stands out with its tall, arched windows and a pale stone facade that reflects the architectural style favored by Thessaloniki's Jewish community in the early twentieth century. Built by refugees from Monastir, the synagogue served as a centerpiece for their specific traditions within the city. During the German occupation of nineteen forty-three, the building functioned as a storehouse for the belongings of deported families, which ironically spared the structure from the destruction that claimed most other synagogues in Thessaloniki.
