Aristotelous Square

Aristotelous Square opens wide toward the Thermaic Gulf, defined by its massive, curving colonnades and cream-colored buildings that stretch from the waterfront all the way up to the city center. Architect Ernest Hebrard designed this space in nineteen eighteen after a fire destroyed most of the city. He intended for the square to act as a monumental axis for the town. While he envisioned a grander scale, the project eventually gave Thessaloniki a distinct, open stage for public life, protests, and major festivals.
