Athonos Square

Athonos Square sits behind a row of low, tiled buildings, marked by the narrow alleys that cut through the old market blocks. This square served as a gathering point for refugees from Asia Minor arriving in the nineteen twenties. They opened small workshops here to continue the traditional woodworking and wicker crafts they brought with them. Today, the wooden chairs and hand-woven baskets displayed on the pavement show the same trade that settled these stalls nearly a century ago.
