Holy Church of Saint Nicholas Orphanos

The Church of Saint Nicholas Orphanos is a small, unassuming rectangular stone building tucked behind a high garden wall in Thessaloniki. Unlike the city's grander cathedrals, this fourteenth-century structure maintains the quiet intimacy of a private chapel. Inside, vivid frescoes cover almost every inch of the walls, depicting saints and gospel scenes with unusual softness. They survived centuries of Ottoman rule because the church was likely part of a monastery, shielded from the conversion efforts that stripped icons from many other city sites.
