The Kapani Market is a maze of narrow, open-air lanes covered by rusted metal awnings that shelter rows of fresh fish, mounds of bright spices, and hanging strings of garlic. It has functioned as the central food market of Thessaloniki since the Ottoman era, surviving the great fire of nineteen seventeen that leveled most of the city center. Merchants here still haggle in the same rhythm as their predecessors, keeping the old commercial heart of the city beating behind the modern storefronts.
