Chausath Khambha

Sixty-four white marble columns support the flat roof of Chausath Khambha. This burial chamber, built in sixteen twenty-four, holds the tomb of Mirza Aziz Koka, the foster brother of the Mughal emperor Akbar. While the rest of the Nizamuddin neighborhood grew dense and chaotic over the centuries, this structure remained a detached, cool refuge. Mirza Aziz Koka spent his life navigating the complex politics of the Mughal court, and he commissioned this pavilion for his family long before his own death.
