Chhoti Chaupar

Chhoti Chaupar sits at the intersection of two major streets, marked by its namesake, the small square that serves as a central hub for the old city. Maharaja Jai Singh the second designed this space in the early eighteenth century as part of his grid-based city plan. Beneath the square lies a massive subterranean water tank, a feat of engineering built to store rainwater channeled from the surrounding hills. Shopkeepers and passersby walk over this hidden reservoir every day, often unaware of the depth below.
