The City Palace

historic

The City Palace features massive, carved stone gates painted in deep shades of rose and ochre that distinguish it from the surrounding city streets. Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh the second built this royal complex in the early eighteenth century when he moved his capital from Amber. Architecturally, it blends Mughal and Rajput styles within a series of courtyards. During one royal festival, a massive silver water vessel sat here, holding enough holy Ganges water for the Maharaja to bathe during his overseas journey.
