The Hawa Mahal is a wall of nine hundred and fifty-three small windows, each topped with a delicate, arched lattice screen. Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh built this structure in seventeen ninety-nine to let the royal women watch the street life of Jaipur without being seen themselves. The honeycomb design also funnels the breeze through the tiny openings, cooling the inner chambers during the sweltering desert summers. The palace contains no stairs, only steep, narrow ramps that connect the five floors of the facade.
