The Shtiblach of Mea Shearim is a low, unassuming stone building that operates as a perpetual motion machine of prayer. Inside, small rooms are packed with men chanting in overlapping rhythms, twenty-four hours a day. It began in the nineteen thirties when the neighborhood needed a central hub for continuous worship. Today, dozens of separate prayer services happen simultaneously, and you can walk in at three in the morning to find a minyan in full swing, regardless of the hour.
