The Higashiyama Sugawara Shrine sits at the edge of the Higashi Chaya district, marked by a low stone wall and a pair of moss-covered stone foxes guarding the entrance. It honors Sugawara no Michizane, a ninth century scholar and politician who was exiled from the imperial court. Local legend claims Michizane stopped at this site while traveling, and residents built the shrine to commemorate his visit. The current wooden structures date back to the late Edo period, replacing older, smaller shrines destroyed by fire.
