The Utasu Shrine stands out for the vermilion lacquer coating its main gate and the dense, dark canopy of ancient trees that shade its inner courtyard. While much of Kanazawa grew around the castle, this shrine originated as a protector of the city’s northeastern corner. During the Edo period, the local lords patronized the site to secure divine favor for their seat of power. It once hosted vibrant festival performances that drew crowds from across the entire Kaga domain to this small, forested enclave.
