Namiyoke Shrine

The Namiyoke Shrine features a massive, bright red torii gate that stands in stark contrast to the surrounding industrial sprawl of the Tsukiji district. During the mid seventeenth century, the shogunate struggled to reclaim land from the bay until a glowing deity appeared on the waves, guiding the workers to solidify the earth. The shrine was built to appease those rough waters. Today, merchants from the nearby fish market still come here to pray for safety and successful business on the docks.
