The glass block walls of the Maison Hermes form a massive, glowing grid that rises thirteen stories above the Ginza district. Designed by Renzo Piano in two thousand one, the building uses thirteen thousand individual glass blocks, each custom-cast to fit the structure’s precise proportions. Inside the tenth floor, the Le Forum gallery hosts rotating contemporary art installations meant to push the boundaries of materials and light. The architect wanted the building to mimic a traditional Japanese lantern, casting a soft, steady glow.
