Kuroeya sits on the corner of a busy street in Nihonbashi, distinguished by a traditional shopfront that feels miles removed from the surrounding glass office towers. This is a lacquerware store that has operated in the same neighborhood for over three hundred years. When the Tokugawa shogunate established Edo as the center of Japan in the seventeenth century, the shop began selling durable bowls and trays to the shoguns and the city’s rising merchant class, earning the nickname, the lacquerware of the shogun.
