Okuno Building

The Okuno Building features a manual elevator with an accordion gate that requires a firm hand to operate. Completed in nineteen thirty-two, this structure once served as luxury apartments for the elite of Ginza. Yoshiaki Okuno designed it as a modern residential complex during an era of rapid Westernization in Tokyo. It survived the firebombing of the city during the second world war. Today, individual rooms host small art galleries and independent boutiques, with many tenants preserving the original tile floors and fixtures.
