Church of St. John the Baptist

The Church of Saint John the Baptist features a dome resting on an unusually high drum and sits several meters below the current street level. Its stone walls date to the middle of the eleventh century, when merchants from Amalfi built the structure as a hospital and chapel for Latin pilgrims. During the Crusades, the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem took charge of the site, turning it into their headquarters while they cared for the sick and wounded within the city walls.
