Colonnaded Street

The Colonnaded Street functions as the grand commercial spine of ancient Petra. Its defining feature is a series of tall, weathered limestone pillars that once framed a bustling walkway lined with shops and colonnaded porticos. While other Roman cities often built straight roads, the Nabataeans integrated this street into the rugged, natural valley floor, forcing it to curve slightly to follow the terrain. A merchant selling silk here in the first century would have stood right where the paving stones remain today.
