Garden Temple

The Garden Temple in Petra sits on a cliffside, marked by a broad, flat terrace and a row of four carved columns that hang suspended above the valley floor. It functioned as a private sanctuary for the Nabataean elite, designed to host ritual meals and ceremonial banquets overlooking the city. When archaeologists cleared the surrounding debris, they found a complex network of hidden cisterns and ceramic pipes carved directly into the rock, designed to collect every drop of rainwater for a garden that once flourished here.
