Winged Lion Temple

The Winged Lion Temple features columns topped with carved stone lions, a motif that distinguishes it from the surrounding Nabataean architecture. While most buildings in Petra functioned as tombs or dwellings, this structure served as a dedicated cult center. Archaeologists found evidence that the inner sanctuary held a large stone baetyl, a block representing a deity, surrounded by a complex system of hydraulic channels. The temple collapsed during a massive earthquake in three hundred sixty-three, leaving the lions broken among the rubble.
